Bible Study Devotional – Day 58 – Commentary Romans 9:30-33 – How is righteousness obtained? – Part 1

What then shall we say?  That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.  Why not?  Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works.  They stumbled over the “stumbling stone.”  As it is written:  ‘See I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”  (Romans 9:30-33a).

“Now to you who believe, this stone is precious.  But to those who do not believe…it is a stone that causes people to stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” (1 Peter 2:7-8)

If not before, then, today, a “gynamic” rock has been placed in your path.  You can choose to build the foundation of your life on that rock or you can stumble and fall on the rock. {And that rock is Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:4)} If you don’t realize that you need a Savior or you think you can follow the Ten Commandments and be righteous in the eyes of God, then you will stumble and fall over the rock like Israel has. They pursued righteousness on their own without the help of God, and they have not been able to obtain it.

But if you’ve made mistakes with your life and know that you need our Savior, Jesus; knock and the door will be opened to you.  (Matthew 7:7b) God is drawing you to Himself through Jesus. When Jesus opens the door to you, tell Him that you want Him to be your Savior. You are about to get God’s gift of righteousness for free. The first step in obtaining righteousness is to open the door and trust Him!

“And the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 9:33b)
