SOAP Devotion Galatians 3:28-29 – What does the Bible say about prejudice? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 732

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:28-29
In the ‘70s before college, I worked for North American Coal, Standard Oil of Ohio, and a property management firm. I was sexually harassed in two out of three jobs, and all my bosses were men.
The best position an uneducated woman could hope for was lead secretary. Some men in the workplace sexually harassed women, and there was no recourse except to find another job where other men would exploit them. Most educated women were nurses, teachers, and full-time moms. It was worse for females in Paul’s time. They had no rights.
I love today’s scripture which says everyone should be treated equally.
Then, why do some churches still not allow women to be preachers or elders? They hang their hats on Paul’s quote from Timothy 2:12: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man, she must be quiet.”
I bristle. Which is true? Does God think both men and women are worthy or that women should not teach and keep quiet?
Notice that Paul uses the pronoun “I.” Like all other men in that time period, he treated women as lesser beings. It was he, not God, who minimized women.
God sees nationality, skin color, and gender as he does eye color—different, but perfect. Despite our shortcomings, he sees Paul, you, and I as righteous. He loves all and asks us to love one another.
Father, I praise you for diversity. Help me love different-looking, different-thinking, and prejudiced people as you do. Bind me and my family closer to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. There is no one who is exactly the same as another person. We are all different, but all of us are children of God. I so agree that God loves us all with no prejudice. There are still many cultures that don’t believe that women are worthy. In our country change has come slowly for women and people of color. We need to keep improving but we have come a long way.

    1. We have definitely come a long way. I believe incorrect Bible translations may be one of the problems of female discrimination. The Greek word adelphoi, often translated as brothers in the Bible, can also mean brothers and sisters. The Greek word anthropos, often translated as a man, means human being, either a male or a female. Men were very discriminatory back when the Bible was translated. Alhough I believe the Bible is God’s word, male translations did not do it justice. I prayed for you and your family today. Blessings.
