SOAP Daily Devotional Acts 27:1-3 – How does God comfort us? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 689

When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment. We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us. The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs. (Acts 27:1-3)

We recently purchased a family retreat on the Suwannee River. An elderly couple sold the property furnished and “as is,” which we discovered meant they couldn’t clean it out. Their children didn’t offer much help but had the decency to clean the refrigerator. The amount of work on the overgrown property seems overwhelming.

But—Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

My son is coming tomorrow to help me clean out what I can’t reach and what is too heavy for me to move. One of my daughters offered to help in a couple of weeks. A woman that I’ve only met once reached out. I didn’t want to bother her, but I remembered God puts people in our lives so we can comfort each other.  So I called.

God placed Paul in the hands of an empathetic centurion who let his friends, Luke and Aristarchus, travel with him and allowed him to visit friends in Sidon.

God also wants to soothe you. When life seems overwhelming, pray for help, think of someone who can assist, and make your needs known as Paul did.

Father, I praise You for friends and family who support me. I need help. Give me wisdom on whom to ask. Keep my family and me safe today and bind us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

  1. God will soothe you, Jody! I’m sure you do feel overwhelmed with lack of family support. I do think that eventually everyone will work through their problems and you will have the support and the help that you need to settle into your new retirement home. I am not sure you should be thinking of your new purchase as a family retreat, but as a retirement home for you and Sam. I think that all the kids will work through all the problems that they are experiencing at the moment and will eventually feel that your home will be a great place to visit. I know in the future it will become a great place to share family love. By the way if you need help….you can ALWAYS count on me. I am a phone call and a drive away. I would love to help if you need me. I only have have 2 weeks of treatments left.

    1. I feel we’ll see each other soon, even though it is hard for either of us to plan at the moment. I am also a phone call away if you need me. I feel soothed this morning, and I also pray you feel God’s calm. Love you, Sis.
