Acts 12:24-13:3 – How does God reveal his will to us?

But the word of God continued to spread and flourish. When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark. Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 12:24-Acts 13:3)

The focus of the early church moves from Jerusalem to Antioch. As Jewish hearts were hardened, Gentiles were accepting Jesus as their savior. We’re reminded that the Holy Spirit led the church as the Spirit spoke to the church leaders when they were worshiping and fasting, asking them to set apart Barnabus and Saul (Paul) for a mission trip. Not only did the church obey the Holy Spirit, they ministered to God by worshiping, fasting, and praying, and they loved and supported Barnabus and Paul by praying for them and placing their hands on them.

Like Paul and Barnabus, everyone of us is capable of doing something greater than ourselves. If you’re not sure what mission the Holy Spirit is calling you for, worship, fast, pray, listen, and believe the Holy Spirit will speak to you as the Spirit spoke to the leaders of the early church. Ask your loved ones, your church, and/or your small group to pray for and support your mission. Then accept the mission, do what you can do, and let the Holy Spirit lead and fill you with power.

Those are the steps the early church took and is the reason that the word of God continued to spread and flourish. Your mission will also flourish if you take those same steps.

Father, I praise you for filling me with Your Holy Spirit to give me power and guidance. Give me the heart to fast as I crave You instead of food. I’m ready and willing to listen to the mission you have set me apart for. Show me where to start and put people into my life to love and support me and help me accomplish Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
