Daily Devotional Acts 9:26-27 – Why does God give us friends? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 529

When he (Saul) arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. However, Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles, and described to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road to Damascus, and how He had spoken to him, and how at Damascus Saul had preached openly and spoken confidently in the name of Jesus. (Acts 9:26-27)

When I read today’s Scripture, it reminded me of the importance of having a good friend. It made me ache for my best friend who died from cancer just over a year ago. My sister and sister-in-law are both best friends. They support me and would do anything for me, but they live far away.

Saul returned to Jerusalem and left his best friends, Judas and Ananias, in Damascus. Saul expected the disciples in Jerusalem would include him. But instead Saul was shunned because they didn’t believe he was converted.

God sent Saul a friend when he needed one most. Saul needed a sponsor and a mentor  and Barnabus provided those needs. In return, Saul helped Barnabus with a mission in Antioch. Friends invest time in each other and support one another. God knows our needs and sends friends to help us. Without Barnabas’s help, (P)(S)aul likely would not have written most of the New Testament.

Father God, I praise you for giving me family and friends. You know my needs and because You love me, I know you’ll send me a friend who’s a mentor. I need guidance to step out of my comfort zone and begin the project you placed in my heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
