Acts 9:23-25 – What’s in your basket?

After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy among the Jews to kill him, but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through a window in the wall. (Acts 9:23-25)

This past Father’s Day our children called me and wanted a nice gift idea for their dad. My husband wanted a golf club like we had given my son for Christmas but felt it was too expensive to buy for himself. He was amazed and ecstatic when he opened it.

God doesn’t need our gifts, but as our Father, He loves them. Traditionally, we put offerings to God in a basket. The Israelites placed grain, produce, and bread offerings in a basket, and traditional churches place their money offerings in them. Of course, everything we have is from God, but He loves it when we give back.

In return God sends baskets from heaven. Many times his baskets are provisions, but sometimes baskets from above are protection. A crippled man was lowered through a rooftop in a basket to protect him from the crowds, so he could be healed by Jesus. Baby Moses was lowered in a basket into the Nile for protection from soldiers who were ordered to kill Jewish babies. Now Saul is lowered from an opening in a wall in a basket to protect him from assassination.

I have an empty basket in my kitchen. This week I’m going to buy a flowering plant for it. I know as the Holy Spirit soars through my house, she’ll not only love its beauty, she’ll feel special that I dedicated it to her. In return she protects me.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I praise You for sending me Your Holy Spirit. Thank you for Your protection of my family and for this Scripture, a reminder to give back. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
