Daily Devotional Luke 22:45-46 – Should Christians pray before going to sleep? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 391

When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” (Luke 22:45-46)

Those with clinical depression sleep a lot. Sorrow is exhausting. But Jesus knows if we don’t pray, we’ll fall into temptation. Peter will soon be tempted and deny Jesus because he slept without praying first. Included in the Lord’s Prayer, our template for prayer, is “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” The enemy delivers temptation constantly, and we must pray to fight it daily.

Jesus tells his apostles and us to pray before sleeping. Often people have nightmares or wake up sick, grumpy, or angry because the enemy attacks us at night while we’re sleeping. We need to pray every night, especially when we’re fighting a bad habit or trait, for God to fight off the enemy for us.

Father God, I praise you for the grace and peace you give me. Help me do your will by leaving _______ at the cross. I know the enemy will try and tempt me every day. Lead me away from the enemy and give me the power of your Holy Spirit and send an angel to strengthen me so I can fight temptation, sorrow, and anger without exhausting myself during this Christmas season. Let this be a time that Your perfect love and peace prevail. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. It will be a busy day ahead for most people, cooking, baking, some with a last run for Christmas presents and some decorating on Christmas Eve. BUT because of COVID some people will be alone and they will experience sadness and depression. They will be apart from family and friends. I pray for these people. I pray, Father, that you will be with them, holding them in your loving arms, so they can find peace and joy for the birth of your Son. I pray a lot in the morning and I pray a lot during the day. Morning prayer, for me, is so peaceful and the way I like to start my day. This morning it is dark. The Christmas tree is on and everyone is still sleeping, so it is peaceful. I don’t pray a lot at night. I just don’t pray well when I am so tired. I can’t focus my mind. Perhaps I should make more of an effort. What is your suggestion, Jody? Should I say the Lord’s Prayer?

    1. Praying the Lord’s prayer doesn’t hurt but try to personalize it. Sometimes it helps to think of all the blessings you have received in a day and thank God for them. Merry Christmas!!!

  2. Thinking of the blessings that I have received during the course of the day and thanking God for these blessings is a good idea. Thanks, Jody.
