An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. (Luke 22:43-44)
A couple days ago I cut my knuckle on a newly-opened can. Blood poured from it and quickly dripped on the counter before I could reach the paper towels. In this manner, Jesus sweated profusely. We read yesterday he was overwhelmed to the point of death, so God sent an angel to strengthen him.
We can’t see angels because we don’t have spiritual eyes, but I imagine they could be sitting in trees, rooftops, or even next to us on the couch. Or maybe not. The one sent to Jesus appeared almost immediately from heaven. The one who lifted a car off my daughter came instantly also. Angels are available at a moment’s notice. We can see angels that appear in human form, but we don’t know they’re angels. Hebrews 13:2 says: “Do not forget to entertain strangers for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
As we’re about to break free from the bad habit or trait we can only get rid of with God’s help that’s keeping us from complete joy, we discover angels are available to strengthen us. If we hadn’t taken this journey to the cross with Jesus we wouldn’t have known. Let’s pray for God to send an angel to strengthen us and then pray more earnestly as Jesus did
Dearest Heavenly Father, blessed is your name. At the cross as I abandon craving ________ more than I crave you or a bad habit _________ causing me not to feel your love, give me the power of Your Holy Spirit and send an angel to help me, comfort me, and strengthen me. Only with your help can I be successful. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
