Daily Devotional Luke 16:16-18 – Are Christians supposed to follow the Ten Commandments? Part 2 – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 324

The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the law. Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Luke 16:16-18)

When I first read this Scripture, it confused me. In The Pages of Her Life, by James L Rubart, Allison was equally confused. God rewrote some of the words in Allison’s journal like he rewrote the Ten Commandments. I’m thinking by the end of the book it will become apparent that God rewrote Allison’s journal to change her heart and her journey and hopefully to set her free.

God, of course, sent His Son to change our hearts and our journeys and teach us truth to set us free. He sent John the Baptist to usher in that change. Jesus replaced the laws of the Old Testament when He said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40) Jesus replaced the High Priest and became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Mosaic law was no longer necessary.

If we act in love 100% of the time, we won’t break any law. But Pharisees need laws to judge others. Jesus speaks to them in John 8:31-37: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. … So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.”

These Pharisees forced their way into the Good News of the Kingdom of God without intention of holding onto Jesus’ teachings or becoming his disciples. They listened carefully only to catch Jesus breaking a law. Because their power was law enforcement, they wanted Jesus crucified.

Jesus chose a Mosaic Law to demonstrate it would be easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for Jews to eliminate one stroke of one letter of one word from any law. Exodus 20:14 states, “You shall not commit adultery.” God expanded on some of the commandments but not this one. The Jews in power after Moses, Kings and Pharisees, exponentially expanded the Mosaic Law to increase their power. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 expanded the definition of adultery to include divorced people. If they remarried, both parties committed adultery. The Pharisees gave themselves more power to bully and punish people.

Since this is a favorite post for many and I have been asked for more on this subject, please see https://www.jodyarmstrong.org/2018/12/06/day-38-romans-83-4-december-6-2018/ if you are interested in this subject.

Father God, thank you for your grace that forgives sin that you hate. Help me forgive bullies as you do and not become one myself. On a larger scale let this country not categorize each other into groups we don’t belong in, call each other names, and bully and punish each other. Lord, help us unite in love and show me how I can be part of the healing process. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. As you say, if we act in love 100% of the time we will break no laws. Not many people are capable of doing that 100% of the time. We can try to do our best though and ask to be forgiven when we fail. We have all judged when we should not have. God will judge us and we should not judge each other. Jesus took what was so complicated and made it easy for us by taking away all the rules and telling us to love one another and love love our God with all our heart, soul and mind. I pray that I am successful.

    1. I don’t think anyone is capable of loving 100% of the time. I know I’m not even though I try. I see many Christians that don’t try to restrain themselves from judging. They judge everyone with sexual sins when in the past, they had sexual sins themselves. I don’t understand. Yes, we are human and our judgments slip through or we roll our eyes every now and then, but only some of us realize it’s wrong to judge others.

  2. I think that everything posted made a great deal of sense.
However, think about this, suppose you were to write a killer headline?
