Bible Study Devotional – Day 209 – Commentary Luke 9:5-6 – What should I do when I’m rejected?

If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them. So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. (Luke 9:5-6)

In Kankakee, Illinois, the Discipleship Center is a rehab center with a large greenhouse and shop where addicts are healed by becoming disciples of Jesus and learning work ethic. It is run by a pastor and a teacher, husband and wife. They are only two people, and they can make the greatest difference if they take in people who are open to the Gospel of Jesus. They reject addicts who speak against Him.

Jesus gives us permission to reject people who aren’t open to His love. We shouldn’t force God’s love on people. In Jesus’ early ministry, He had only twelve other lights shining for Him. He needed His light to spread quickly for His message to cover the world. Therefore, Jesus gave His disciples permission to shake the dust off their feet or to wash their hands of people who weren’t receptive to God’s love. He wants them to get in their boat and leave without guilt. It isn’t that Jesus doesn’t love the people who initially reject Him, but later He will send people of like backgrounds who will understand, empathize, and reach them. Remember the ex-demoniac was better able to reach people who had demons than Jesus was, so Jesus got in His boat and left.

Father God, I’ve been through a lot in this world, and you’ve taught me many lessons. Put me in touch with people who will relate to me so I can spread Your love and help people heal. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. Rejection is difficult no matter what the reason. I think about what Jesus and the disciples went through while trying to spread the word and some days they must have felt so discouraged. Jody, correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like most of the time when they were trying to teach people about God’s word, a miracle or healing had to occur for people to believe. Now there are millions of Christians. It easier to be a Christian now because you can be part of a large group and not be rejected. Back then Christians were going against the Jewish beliefs and were rejected.

    1. It definitely is easier to be a Christian in the United States today as long as it is understood that you keep quiet about your faith. Most who put up a Christmas tree comply with that. It seems like it’s the judgmental Christians who don’t comply with that, giving Christianity a bad name. Those of us who want to spread God’s message of love and hope because of the resurrection of Jesus have to work harder at it. Some congregations take at least two Sundays a year to help people in the community instead of attending church. If every church did that, it would help Christianity. You are right about Jesus and his disciples performing miracles in order for people to believe, but Jesus wouldn’t perform miracles for someone without faith. He refused those, particularly the Pharisees, who wanted a sideshow. I feel discouraged sometimes when I spend so much time on my website and only one or two people read it. However, when I think about you and the conversations we’ve had through my website, it’s all worth it! Thank you for giving me encouragement.

  2. Do not feel discouraged, Jody. You are being God’s Shepard and I know that he wants you to do this and he wants me to be part of it too. I feel strongly about this. It has changed our relationship and brought us closer through Christ. What could be better than that? We are both learning, especially me! I look forward to this time of learning, and unity. Stay strong! I love you, Sis!!!

    1. Yes, our relationship is closer through Christ, and there is nothing better than that. My readership has increased slightly in the last week and God is bringing “Denial of the Enemy to an end and is giving it a great ending. That has been a huge high for me living in a fantasy world of warring and God wins. It will have a second ending similar to Lost — a short chapter at the very end. I will spend the rest of the week writing that and another chapter where they actually build the church they will return to. I should be done by the end of next week and then start editing. Wow. I can’t believe the book is finally coming to an end. Love you, Sis. Thanks for the encouragement.
