Bible Study Devotional Day 165 – Commentary Luke 6:24-25a – What does it mean to hunger for God?

But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. (Luke 6:24-25a)

Steve Debardelaben is a chaplain for the Miami Hurricanes and Miami Heat. In the late 1980’s we were invited into his home because he had ministries for young professionals and the wealthy. I was awed by his mansion, to date the nicest home I’ve been in. Sometimes I wonder why people want to live in ostentatious homes, but this verse reminds us that most wealthy people find comfort in grand homes and rich foods. They wouldn’t be comfortable in my home. Ministries for the wealthy are more needed than ministries for the poor in regards to recruiting souls, and Steve let God use his home to minister to the group who shun Him the most.

When I first read this Scripture, I cringed. I have enough food to eat and my home is on an acre of beautiful oaks. I want for nothing, but I don’t want to be miserable in eternity. Most of you can probably relate. But these verses are about where we receive our comfort from and what we hunger for. Those who find comfort in God and hunger for Him will be blessed. The poor already depend on God for comfort and hunger, so it’s easier for them to receive God’s blessings.

Lord, I thank you for the blessings of comfort and food. Show me how to share my comforts with others. Remind me when I’m nervous to cast my cares on you for comfort. Help me to hunger for you and not food. Amen.

  1. I cringed too. I know we are blessed with comfortable shelter and food on our table. Do we need to feel guilty that we have these things? Is it enough to remember and thank God for all his blessings? Why is it easier for the poor to receive God’s blessing and grace?

    1. Most poor people depend more on God than rich people because they pray constantly for their needs. I think it is important to thank God for our blessings — but more than that He wants us to hunger for His love and stay in touch with Him as often as possible
