SOAP Devotion Galatians 6:2-6 – To what extent should we carry other’s burdens? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 750

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they have deceived themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor. (Galatians 6:2-6)

I quit college to get married when I was eighteen—a huge mistake. I completed a few courses over the five years I was married. After my divorce, I worked from 7-3:00 at the hospital, went to a fast-food all-you-can-eat salad bar, my only meal of the day, took two college classes from 4-8 Monday through Thursday, and spent the weekend studying. I lived in poverty, but I carried my own load. That year was tough, but I’m proud I survived.

During my senior year at the University of Florida, I ran out of money and asked my parents to carry the burden I couldn’t meet. We subtracted my debt from my scholarship and student loan and concluded I was short $100/month.

My parents did for me what God asks us to do in this Scripture—to carry people’s burdens that are beyond their abilities. We are not to take on their responsibilities. If we do so, they’ll lose their sense of pride, purpose, and self-esteem.

God also reminds us in this Scripture to lift up those who have taught you about Jesus by sharing the victories you’ve attained by following the Spirit.

Father, I praise you for those who have carried my burdens when my load was too heavy. Help me do the same for others. Keep me and my loved ones safe and bind us closer to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

  1. You should never do for others, what they can do for themselves. If a loved one or friend can’t do something, and it is beyond their ability, I believe that God would want us to help support that person in their time of need. We should do this in the name of God and pass His word.

    1. Well said, Sis. Love you and hope you’re having a great Memorial Day weekend. So sorry for taking so long to reply to your comments. My life is a blur traveling around the state to see all my grandchildren. I’m so blessed!!! I hope to do better with my blog. Love you.
