SOAP Devotion Galatians 3:15-18 – Is God’s covenant conditional? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 727

Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. For if the inheritance depends on the law then it no longer depends on the promise, but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise. (Galatians 3:15-18)

Have you ever broken a promise? God hasn’t.

The Bible is full of God’s promises. He honors them all. When he presented the covenant, God told Abraham, “I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven. I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 26:4).

The promises in the Old Testament were initially for the Jews, but through Abraham’s seed, Jesus, the promises are for us, too.

God gave Moses the Law 430 years after his covenant with Abraham. Therefore, our inheritance from God is not dependent upon keeping the Law or anything we do. A covenant typically binds both parties to do something for the other, but our inheritance from God depends on God’s love and grace. We can’t earn his promises. He will be our God, and we will be his people no matter what we do.

Father, I praise you that the land of milk and honey belongs to all people through your seed of Jesus. Thank you for the gift of Jewish Law, which shows us we need a Savior to be righteous in God’s eyes. Help me be loving today, so people will know I belong to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. God’s covenant is not conditional. He keeps true to His promises and they are always there and waiting for us.

    1. I pray that you are collecting those promises all the time. Don’t let them wait. Haha. Love you, Sis. Merry Christmas!!!
