SOAP Daily Devotion Galatians 217-18 – Are you a sinner? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 720

But if in seeking to be justified in Christ we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker. (Galatians 2:17-18)

While attending college, most students distance themselves from Jesus. They expect to be happy learning, enjoying independence with new friends, and/or partying. I was no exception. I pretended to be happy but wasn’t. In high school, I had a relationship with Jesus but my legalistic church taught me I had to follow all the commandments, and I couldn’t. I felt I had disappointed God and couldn’t face him anymore.

We try to be loving, not break any laws, and not surrender to our addictions, but we can’t be perfect 24/7. God designed us with weaknesses so we would need a savior. Jesus doesn’t promote sin. He declares us righteous. In God’s kingdom, we’re not under any laws and, therefore, can’t sin.

It’s when we seek to be blameless by doing good deeds and being good people that we fall short and become sinners. The enemy reminds us of our mistakes and declares us to be failures. We must destroy footings built on legalism, make Jesus our foundation, and build our lives around him. If we return to saving ourselves, we’ll become lawbreakers again. We can’t be happy without Jesus.

Father, I praise you for sending Jesus. Present opportunities for me to help others to spread your love, not to save myself. When the enemy tells me I’m a failure, remind me that God says I’m righteous because I’ve asked your son to save me. In His name, I pray, amen.

  1. Religious laws make us sinners. Some religions have so many rules and laws to follow that makes it easy to become a sinner. No one can follow all the rules, all the time. In Heaven, there are no rules and no sinners. Religious rules also cause people to leave the church because they are frustrated that they can’t follow all the rules. Religious laws can also cause division within a church, and cause people to leave the church. I saw all of the above when attending church when I was growing up. It doesn’t need to be that way, and it should not be that way.

    1. Love your comments always. Very well said. Finding a loving church that teaches the truth and nothing else is hard. I may end up starting a home church at the River house if I can’t find the right place to worship. Love you, Sis. I prayed for you and your upcoming trip this morning.
