SOAP Devotional Acts 28:17-20 –- How should I respond to someone who has hurt me? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 703

Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: “My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death. The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar. I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people. For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.” (Acts 28:17-20)

I was sorry to see another Heaven or Hell? sign in my new river town of Branford, FL. Why do Christians think that message conveys love? God charges us to love one another and tell others about Jesus.

Paul loves his Jewish brothers and sisters even though they’re the reason he’s chained. He realizes God would release him if he were bound for no reason. He called the Jewish leaders, not to charge them for his detention nor to free him, but to tell them about the hope of Israel, Jesus, their Messiah.

In every city he visits, Paul first tells the Jews about Jesus. After they reject Jesus, he tells Gentiles the good news. Paul forgives, prays for, and loves non-believers who are against him, then he tells them about Jesus’ compassion. Do we do the same?

Father, I praise you for loving everyone, even those who hurt your son. Help me pray for and show your love to those who have hurt me. Bring them closer to you. Open the eyes of your chosen people to Jesus’ love and forgiveness. In Christ’s name, I pray. Amen.

  1. I do not like those signs either. I don’t think that God wants us to think about Him in that way. It portrays a threatening ideology. You think my way or you will go to hell. God is love and the hate has no place in Christianity. We are all rejected at sometime in our life. Sometimes it is very hurtful and difficult to let go of those feelings. Prayer and time help when forgiving someone. God wants us to forgive but when the hurt runs deep it is a difficult task and takes time.

Jody, I am so glad that you are back to your devotions. I have spent time this morning reading your responses to my writing. I missed that! Blessings to you and our families this morning. I am also praising God for healing and giving Him the glory.

    1. Writing devotions on the Book of Acts was a big project for me. I chose it because I am not as familiar with that book as I am with others. Hence, it was more difficult for me to write. I’m hoping the book of Galatians will be easier for me and despite working on the river house, I will post more often. I loved your comment this morning. It summed up my feelings exactly. It is so encouraging to me that you read and comment on my devotions. As I’ve said before, I’d write just for you. Hope you’re able to get new glasses soon so that you can see again. Love you Sis. I’m praying for peace in your life and to bind our families and us closer to Jesus. Blessings, Jody
