The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping. But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. The rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces of the ship. In this way, everyone reached land safely. (Acts 27:42-44)
My son is with me at our river house working remotely for the next couple of weeks. Over the weekend, I cleaned the rafters on the porch. My ladder lost its footing and fell over while I hung onto a wood plank that hung ten feet from the floor. I yelled, and my son happened to be in the house close by. At first he grabbed me, but I was able to hold on, so he picked up the ladder. I climbed down safely.
I used the same ladder to paint in high places when I was alone and had no problem. I think the incident was God reminding me that he’ll keep me safe like he kept Paul safe. God used my son to save me and Julius, the centurion, to save Paul.
I can imagine every man on Paul’s ship prayed for safety. God shattered the ship and used the wreckage so each man who couldn’t swim drifted to shore without harm. God uses the wreckage in our lives to alert us we need a savior and to prove he can save us.
Father, I praise you for your reminders that you’re always with me keeping me safe. Help me to trust you and have great faith so you don’t need to use wreckage to remind me I have a savior. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
Jody, I suppose you realize that I am not very happy about your choice to be up high on a ladder. I hope you will think about your safety in the future, especially when you are alone at the house. You were plain old lucky that Sam was there when it happened. God probably did have something to do with it but it should be a strong reminder to you that you should not be up on a high ladder. I think you would feel the same if the circumstance was reversed and I was up on the ladder. I think it was God’s reminder not to do it in the future. If God was always there, there would be no accidents for Christians. He has reminded you so be cautious!!
