SOAP Daily Devotional Acts 25:6-12 – What does the Bible say about standing up for yourself? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 678

After spending eight or ten days with them (Jewish leaders and high priests), Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he convened the court and ordered that Paul be brought before him. When Paul came in, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him. They brought many serious charges against him, but they could not prove them. Then Paul made his defense: “I have done nothing wrong against the Jewish law or against the temple or against Caesar.” Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?” Paul answered: “I am now standing before Caesar’s court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews, as you yourself know very well. If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!” (Acts 25:6-12)

After being in prison for two years, Paul once again must defend himself before Governor Festus and the Jews. Because the Holy Spirit had placed Paul’s nephew in the right place at the right time, Paul was still alive and knew that if he returned to Jerusalem, the Jews would kill him. Jesus had also told Paul he would fulfill his desire to visit his brothers and sisters in Rome.

Paul determined that he must stand up for himself and refuse Festus’ request that he go to Jerusalem. Must demand his rights as a Roman citizen and appeal to Caesar so he would go to Rome.

Galatians 5:1 (MSG) says: “Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.”

Is someone keeping you from fulfilling your dreams? If so, stand up for yourself so God can grant your desires.

Father, I praise You for placing a dream in my heart that seems impossible to fulfill. Change my circumstances and give me the courage to stand up for myself so I can attain it. I can do all things through You. Keep me and my loved ones safe today and bind us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

  1. Standing up for yourself can take courage. When it is something important we need to take our stand, so we can be true to ourselves. We can find our courage through Christ. Paul was a strong man, who suffered, but stayed true to himself. Praying for our families today. Blessings Jody!
