SOAP Daily Devotional Acts 23:31-35 – Will God protect me? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 668

So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris. The next day they let the cavalry go on with him, while they returned to the barracks. When the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him. The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning he was from Cilicia, he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s palace. (Acts 23:31-35)

Satan doesn’t want people to know Jesus. Since God used Paul to introduce many people to Him, Paul was a threat. The enemy planned to use the Jerusalem Jews to riot and kill Paul. God thwarted his original plan, so the enemy used forty men to plot against Paul.

God used the commander, Claudius Lysias; Paul’s nephew; two hundred foot soldiers; two hundred skilled swordsmen; and a calvary of seventy to protect Paul on his journey to Rome. Now he is under the protection of Governor Felix and his guards.

When we ask God for protection, we, too, are under guard. He will use different means and people, as He did for Paul, to protect us from bullies and our enemies on our journey through life.

Father, I praise You for protecting me. I know Your plans for me are perfect. Let me step into this day to do Your work with confidence and the power of Your spirit knowing You have my back. Bind me and my loved ones closer to You as we grow in faith. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. This might be my second comment. I can’t remember if I just read this and had to think about my comment. Or did I comment…the joys of old age! Who will God protect and why? I have been thinking about this for 2 months. The horror of the war in Ukraine is more than I can imagine, and I pray that I never know. I can not understand how there could be a greater good in all of this. Putin is the definition of evil. Why is God allowing him to destroy a country, kill thousands of people, displace thousands of people etc. Where is He and why isn’t He stopping this? I have never prayed for anyone to be assassinated but I am praying for Putin to be killed so the suffering will stop. I am praying that God will stop this and protect the people of Ukraine.

    1. It can seem like God isn’t protecting the Ukrainians. Many have died fighting for their country. Yet, I expected Ukraine would fall almost immediately without much help from NATO or the U.S., and they haven’t. I also believe that those who have died have met or will meet Jesus and will come to know His perfect love through God’s grace. They will shed no more tears. I have to believe that God’s grace and love is a form of protection. But God had started a work in Paul of writing the New Testament. And when God begins a work in us, he won’t let us leave earth until that work is finished. That’s just my belief. You may believe something different.
