SOAP Daily Devotional Acts 23:25-30 – Why does God allow suffering? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 667

He (Claudius Lysias) wrote a letter as follows: (from) Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings. This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him; but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen. I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin. I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment. When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him. (Acts 23:25-30),

Claudius Lysias, a self-centered politician, wrote this letter. He used the pronoun, I, eight times to make himself sound like a hero to Governor Felix. He also lied, saying that he rescued Paul because Paul was a Roman citizen when he actually did it to prevent a riot.

Claudius determined there was no charge against Paul that deserved death or imprisonment, so he should’ve set Paul free. But that would have prevented the opportunity for Claudius to commend himself.

Perhaps you know someone who’s egotistical and/or lies like Claudius and makes your life dismal. But remember God turns misery into victory. On the very first Easter weekend, God turned the heartbreak of Jesus’ crucifixion into the triumph of resurrection and salvation. We share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.

Father, I praise you for saving me by the crucifixion and resurrection of Your Son. ______________ is a thorn in my crown. Let me move forward with joy, trusting you to take him/her/it out of my life or use the situation for good. In Christ’s name, I pray. Amen

  1. One of the Bible verses I have been using for healing. Him, and by His stripes we are healed. After the misery and suffering comes healing, and then comes victory. After victory comes then we give God the glory.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sacrificing Your Son, so that we may have eternal life., and our sins are forgiven,
In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
