Daily Devotional Acts 20:4-6 – Do you show gratitude to those who have helped you? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 631

He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy also, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia. These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas. But we sailed from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread, and five days later joined the others at Troas, where we stayed seven days. (Acts 20:4-6)

Joel Osteen told the story of a naval fighter pilot from WWII who met up years later with the man who packed the parachute that saved his life when his plane caught on fire and he had to eject. The retired pilot felt bad he had never connected with the parachute packer during the war because the packer had a lower rank. Joel didn’t want those same regrets, so he acknowledged the volunteers in his church who make the services run smoothly.

Luke listed the volunteers that helped Paul, men of all classes. Secondus, given a number instead of a name, would have been a slave.

Do we acknowledge and give back to the people who help us achieve our goals even if their jobs are considered lower? Think of someone who helped you become who you are and thank them or send them a gift this week.

Father, I praise You for sending people into my life to help me. Remind me to acknowledge them and give back. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. Yes, I do believe I show gratitude when someone takes the time to help me or is kind to me. I feel like our mom taught us to have good manners. I try to always be grateful, show thanks and try to remember not to take things that happen for granted. Pay it forward!

    1. Thanks for your comment. The lesson reminded me to thank Jan and the two women in my editing group, so I sent them emails. I don’t always tell someone when I am grateful and will try to be better. I know I am always comforted when someone tells me they are grateful for something I have done. Blessings, Jody
