When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together. Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater. This assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. (Acts 19:28-32)
We’re too familiar with riots. They begin with anger and shouting. A crowd gathers with each person bringing their anger and frustrations, many not knowing the original cause. People throw rocks at police and windows. They start fires. Some see the opportunity for monetary gain and loot stores.
The rioters at Ephesus rejected Jesus. Isn’t that also true of rioters today? He lived and died to give us love, peace, guidance, and direction, all absent in a disorderly crowd.
If you’re angry, frustrated, or in a state of confusion look at your relationship with Jesus. He may not be on the throne of your heart.
Father, I praise You for sending Jesus. Help me seek His refuge and give Him my problems and confusion knowing He’ll work through them with me. In His name, I pray, amen.
