Daily Devotional Acts 16:6-8 – How do we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us? – Free online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 587

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. (Acts 16:6-8)

In life’s journeys, sometimes we will be led by the Holy Spirit as Paul was on his first journey. When we are led by the Spirit, we will be welcomed (at least initially) in the places we are led to. In this second journey, it is Paul who takes the initiative to spread the gospel and encourage believers. He is welcomed in Lystra because it was God’s will for Paul to mentor Timothy, but God closes the door closes in Bithynia.

It isn’t often that the Holy Spirit pulls us out of bed and says, “This is what I want you to do today.” Most of the time our journeys will be like this second mission trip of Paul’s. We will take the initiative to do what we think God wants us to do. This type of journey requires more faith and prayers. We must look for an inner sense of peace from the Holy Spirit to know if we’ve made the right decision and look for an open window when God has locked a door.

There are two ways to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. If we choose to let the Holy Spirit take initiative and lead us, we may wait forever and accomplish nothing. If we choose to take initiative, we must pray for inner peace and open doors and windows to make sure the Spirit is leading us. Take initiative this week to do something you think God wants you to do and pray during every step you take.

Heavenly Father, I praise you for the Holy Spirit who gives me power and wisdom and leads me. Remind me to ask Your Spirit for guidance so I know I am doing Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. I had to think about this topic for awhile. How do we know God is leading us and wanting us to do something? If I feel at peace with what I am doing, perhaps it is a sign that it is a good choice and God approves and has lead me in the right direction. I do believe we need to ask for guidance.

    1. When you ask God to lead you, you know he is leading you. You are right that feeling peace is a sign your will is in alignment with God’s. Blessings today, I love you.
