Daily Devotional Acts 13:32-33 – What will relationships be like in heaven? – Free online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 567

“We tell you the good news: What God promised our ancestors he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘You are my son; today I have become your father.’” (Acts 13:32-33)

I cried when I heard the good news that my boyfriend, whom I loved so much, wanted to marry me. Later this month I will have been his bride for 36 wonderful years. Although we will have a relationship in heaven, it will change. All our relationships will change.

Jesus’ relationship to God also changed. Prior to God raising up Jesus, Jesus was called the Word. “In the beginning was the Word….Through him all things were made;…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:1-14)

Psalm 2, written by Jesus, tells us that after God installed him as king in heaven, God said to him: ‘You are my son. Today, I have become your father.’” (Psalm 2:4-7) This means that after Jesus resurrected and was installed as king in heaven, God changed His name from the Word to God’s son, showing that Jesus’ relationship to God had changed. Not only would he create God’s plan into being, He would also be God’s son.

When we’re in heaven, we’ll be first and foremost God’s sons and daughters. “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12) I will still be the daughter of Paul and Claire and the daughter-in-law of Samuel and Mary Jane, but those relationships will be secondary to being child of God.

Luke 20:35-36 tells us that those taking part in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage. There will be no new marriages in heaven because we’ll be married to Jesus. Revelations 19:9 says, “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” At that wedding supper, all in attendance will marry Jesus.

In heaven, I’ll still have a close relationship to my husband, Sam, but my primary marriage will be to Jesus. There will be no lack of love in heaven and that is good news!

God, I praise you for being a loving father. I look forward to the wedding supper of the lamb when I will marry Jesus. As I imagine Your perfect love as a father and Jesus’ perfect love as a mate, help me give that special love to my children and spouse today. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray, amen.

  1. I never realized that God never called Jesus His Son until after the resurrection. When we talked yesterday you mentioned this and I had questions but thought, I will wait until after I read your devotion. After reading the devotion I do not have questions, but wonder why we never learned this in Bible study at church growing up. I think that it is pretty significant information. It is clear from the Bible verses you quoted.

Jody, I pray that you have a good day and can accomplish what you think is important today. I am praying this for myself as well. We both want to be successful with our goals and I know that God will help us through the struggles. When we fail, God will give us the strength to carry on. I pray that we both understand God’s will for us. I love you, Sis!!

    1. What a beautiful prayer of encouragement. Thank you for that. I accomplished everything I, and hopefully God, thought was important yesterday. Today is another day. I also pray that you accomplish your goals. I know with God’s help, we can do it! I have faith in you, Sis.
