Daily Devotional Acts 11:22-26 – Why is encouragement important? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 551

News of this (that many Greeks in Antioch were converting to Christianity) reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. (Acts 11:22-26)

Previously, Barnabus sold his property and gave the proceeds to the apostles to distribute as they saw fit. He also intervened for Paul in Jerusalem because the Christians were afraid he would persecute them. We learn from this Scripture that Barnabus was glad, an encourager, a good man, full of the Holy Spirit, full of faith, followed God’s will, and was a wonderful teacher. Because Barnabus was a great encourager, the disciples had changed his name from Joseph to Barnabus which means encourager.

What if we were always full of joy and the power of the Holy Spirit and strived to encourage those around us? Could we make a difference in others’ lives as Barnabas made in Paul’s life? If it hadn’t been for Barnabus’ encouragement, Paul might not have written most of the New Testament. If it hadn’t been for a professor at Milligan College who encouraged me to be a writer, you might not be reading my blog.

Father, I praise you for the example of Barnabus. Thank you for giving me the power of the Holy Spirit today. Remind me to always praise the gifts of my family, friends, coworkers, and those who help me. Help me not to complain and be happy so others want to be with me. Nudge me to teach and encourage the young people in my life knowing my uplifting words could change their lives. In Jesus name, I pray, amen.

  1. I always felt like I was an encourager when I worked. It was the nature of my job to encourage students to do their best and give them encouragement when they felt that they couldn’t do something. With encouragement they, most often, could do what was asked. As I think about my home now, I feel I do encourage people but I think that I could do it more and better. I also think that I could be a better encourager with extended family, friends and others in my community. So, I will pray about this and try to do a better job in the present and the future.

    1. Again I admire you for wanting to be a better encourager. I do too! Maybe if we talk about how we encouraged people when we talk on the phone it would motivate both of us to encourage more. Blessings, Jody

    1. I think it will help us both, too. I’m not sure I will see anyone today except Sam to encourage unless I catch the WalMart delivery person before they leave.

    1. Thank you for your encouragement and coming to my website. Isn’t it wonderful that God uses people to encourage and drive us to the purpose for which He created us. We can also be one of God’s encouragers and make a difference in someone’s life. I prayed for you and your family today and hope you know how wide and long and high and deep God’s love is for you. Blessings, Jody
