Daily Devotional Acts 8:26-29 – Why is it important to listen to God? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 517

But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, “Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” And he arose and went; and behold, there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship. And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” (Acts 8:26-29)

During my first writer’s conference, I went to the awards’ ceremony alone. I knew a few people, but their tables were full. Since I’m shy, it’s difficult for me to join an interconnected group and make conversation. I felt isolated. Convinced I wouldn’t receive an award, I left.

When God wants to use us for a specific purpose, we’ll hear His voice. It may be a whisper in our ear, a nudging, outright speech, or perhaps, like Philip, an angel will visit us. He may ask us to do something difficult like joining the presence of an influential group as He did Philip, people who may look down on us if we approach them. But we must join whatever chariot God asks; otherwise he can’t use us.

It didn’t bother me I wasn’t recognized for the award I later received, but I missed out on a marketing opportunity that God had arranged for me.

Father God, I praise you for giving me great opportunities. Since you are the God of forgiveness, give me other chances to listen to and obey you. When you put me out of my comfort zone, remind me to pray, so I can do what you ask. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

    1. You might be right. Many people don’t think nudging is from God, but I believe God makes himself heard. I guess you are right about not listening which is why God tells us to be still and know that I am God.
