Acts 7:51-53 – What is circumcision of the heart and ears?

“You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.” (Acts 7:51-53)

“And the Lord Your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:6) An uncircumcised heart has a barrier wall preventing us from loving God with all our hearts and souls. And uncircumcised ears keep us from hearing God.

Circumcision was the sign of the covenant, and every Jewish male had to be circumcised to participate in the covenant.

In our new covenant with God through Jesus our hearts and ears must be circumcised for us to worship God and follow the fantastic life He will build for us. If we resist the Holy Spirit and don’t obey God’s law to love God and one another, we won’t reach our potential and Jesus’ murder would be for naught.

“If you will pay careful attention to what I say and keep my covenant, then you will be my own treasure.” (Exodus 19:5)

Father God, I praise you because You’ve made me Your treasure. Circumcise my ears and my heart so I can hear Your plans for me and spread Your love. Give me the power of the Holy Spirit, send an angel to assist me, and help me obey You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
