Acts 7:33-36 – Does God demand our respect?

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’ This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. He led them out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.” (Acts 7:33-36)

In many Asian cultures taking off shoes and sandals when entering someone’s home is a sign of respect. God asks for our love and respect in exchange for His. God didn’t stop loving or respecting Moses even though he broke the Sixth Commandment. He didn’t take away Moses’ blessing or withhold the power of His Holy Spirit through an angel. Nor will God stop loving or respecting us. It took forty years for God to change Moses, but hopefully it won’t take Him that long to change us.

Since God used a reformed murderer to part the Red Sea and lead His people to the Promised Land, He can also use us to accomplish the extraordinary. But, in return, He demands that we show Him love and respect.

Heavenly Father, I praise You because You love and respect me. Even though I’ve done wrong you continue to bless me. Help me change into a disciple you can use for extraordinary purposes. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
