Daily Devotional Acts 7:30-32 – How do you receive the power of the Holy Spirit? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 506

After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say: ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.

Not all fires are dangerous. We have fires that burn in our hearts. For my husband it’s prosecuting in a courtroom and putting drug dealers in jail. For me it’s writing about Jesus so everyone knows how wide and long and high and deep His love is

Moses had a fire in his heart to save the Jewish people from slavery and lead them into the Promised land. Like Moses, some of our passions cannot be fulfilled on our own. They require special circumstances and coincidences. Moses required the power of the Holy Spirit to force Pharaoh to release the Jewish slaves and provide for them so he could lead them to the Promised Land.

Moses was curious why the burning fire in the bush didn’t harm it. God wanted Moses and us to know our curiosities and the fires that fuel our hearts and send our bodies into action are from Him. For that reason God spoke up and told Moses that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The Lord could have said, “I am your God, Moses?” It would’ve been more personal. But God wanted Moses and us to know Him as the God of the living who makes the dead rise. (See Luke 20:37-38.) His Holy Spirit has the power to separates spirits and souls from dead bodies and resurrect them. That great power is available to Christians. Initially God gives us His power when we repent and claim Jesus as our Savior. He gives us more power when we pray for His Spirit to fill us. And this Scripture reveals that angels bring the power of the Holy Spirit, so we can get more of God’s power by praying for an angel or a legion of angels to help us. That’s why Jesus prayed for and received an angel to strengthen Him just before He was arrested.

Father God, I’m on my knees. I praise you for making your desires for me, my desires. I thank you for letting the power of Your Holy Spirit create circumstances and coincidences in my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit’s power and send an angel to help me so I can do great things for you and give you the glory. I pray in Jesus’ precious and holy name, amen.

  1. When I picture the scene of Moses seeing the burning bush, the Angel and then hearing God’s voice, I imagine it must have been comforting in some ways, and terrifying in other ways. He was amazed and then he trembled with fear. I saw an angel once. It was peaceful and pleasant. It took me awhile to sort it all out and to this day I am still amazed. God has the power to do amazing things. I need to open my heart for the Holy Spirit to enter and allow Him to do amazing things.

    1. I didn’t mention it in my post, but I’m thinking that Moses was fearful of meeting God because he had murdered someone, although I can imagine seeing an angel could be overwhelming. God sent you an angel I’m sure partly because you needed peace. Moses needed His power.
