Daily Devotional Acts 5:12-13 – Why is it important for Christians to be honest? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 480

The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. (Acts 5:12-13)

Recently loved ones were cheated by someone who worked for an air conditioning company who was in their home previously and told them if they needed more work, to call him on the side and he could do it for less money. They called the man and gave him money to buy an air conditioning unit. And guess what? The contractor didn’t install it. Many yearn for a reliable, independent contractor to do work around their home. But watch out! Scammers will take your money.

After the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira, word spread, and both Jews and non-Jews understood that the church was a Holy place with people who were dedicated to one another. Many wanted to remain dedicated to themselves, so church wasn’t the place for them. However, when they needed a contractor or merchant, they called upon someone they could trust. Likely they chose someone in the early church. It is important for all Christians to be honest so Christ’s church is highly regarded.

Heavenly Father, I praise you for your mercy and grace that allow me to be holy. Remind me to be trustworthy. When I give my word to help or be with another, let me follow through with my commitment even when I’m invited to do something more fun. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. Here in the Bible Belt, I frequently hear, “He/She is a Christian and is very honest and trustworthy.” With all the scammers out there waiting to cheat you, it is no surprise that people seek Christians for their honesty. Not a week goes by that someone in our home doesn’t receive a scam call on their phone. That is a whole lot of dishonesty. Really it is so sad. These people are smart to think of the schemes they use to cheat people. If only they used their brains for good this world would be a much better place. This week someone got my debit card number and took money out of my account. They probably got it from the fake credit card readers they put on gas pumps. A few days before that a scammer stole a relative’s messenger account and was trying to scam people using her name and picture. We are being bombarded with dishonesty. I am praying about this.

    1. Many scammers claim to be Christian. I am so sorry to hear someone took money from your account. I never use a debit card even to get money out of the bank, and I never carry one because I’m afraid I will lose it. You’re right. We need to pray to keep scammers away from us. I hope my prayer to keep Satan away from me and my family will suffice. I should also pray for scammers to meet Jesus. Thanks for your comment! Blessings, Jody
