Daily Devotional Acts 4:7-10 – Should we always tell the truth? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 467

They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. (Acts 4:7-10)

Peter speaks sarcastically as Jesus did at times. He knows he wasn’t arrested for doing a good deed. But with the power of the Holy Spirit, Peter takes the opportunity to boldly preach the Gospel to these Jewish leaders that through Jesus there is a resurrection from the dead. That teaching was the very reason that Peter and John were arrested. He even throws in the caveat that the Jewish leaders were responsible for Jesus’ death. Peter speaks without fear because he realizes that these Jewish leaders who thought they had the power to kill Jesus, don’t have that power at all.

Peter has the power to tell the truth, and so should we. Feeling the need to lie should either convict us of a wrongdoing or let us know we’re in a situation of abuse. As children of the most High God, living in abuse is below us. Jesus suffered for us, so we don’t have to suffer. When we ask, God will give us the power of the Holy Spirit to seek refuge from abuse. If you are in an abusive situation, seek help from a church or a social worker.

There is power in telling the truth. People will always trust your word.

Father God, let me tell the truth always, the truth about You and the truth about myself. If I’m tempted to lie, help me discover why? If I’m convicted, let me repent. If I’m scared to tell the truth, give me the power to remove myself from an abusive situation. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. There is so much power in truth. Truth is the basis for trust. I have lied and have asked to be forgiven. The hard part for me, in truth, is when it comes to hurting someone. I don’t like to hurt people intentionally.

    1. I hope I made it clear that sometimes it is only appropriate to ask God for forgiveness when someone doesn’t know when you’ve wronged them. It is when you know that another person is hurting from your wrong to them that you need to ask their forgiveness before returning to the altar. Blessings, Jody
