Daily Devotional Acts 3:14-16 – Why do we pray in the name of Jesus? – Why is Jesus called the Word of Life? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 461

You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see. (Acts 3:14-16)

A couple days ago my sister made the comment, “I know that non-believers heal completely and also others with different faiths heal completely. There are a lot of people out there that believe differently than we do, yet they have perfectly happy and normal lives.” My sister speaks of those who have disowned Jesus, the very people Peter spoke to. They will say things to indicate they are strong and live happy and normal lives, but that doesn’t mean their hearts aren’t aching. No other religion offers a savior who was a living person who offered Himself as a sin offering with written history and proof that God raised Him from the dead. How can non-Christians be completely happy or completely healed without being freed from guilt or not having proof they will see their loved ones again.

There are five reasons we pray in Jesus’ name. Peter’s message is that God makes us strong and heals us completely when we ask for strength and healing in Jesus’ name and have faith that Jesus will heal us completely. The second reason is Jesus’ promise. “My father will give you whatever you ask in my name….Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” The third reason is the enemy submits to us when we pray in Jesus’ name (Luke 10:17). The fourth reason is we are made righteous in Jesus’ name which enables us to be in the presence (1 Corinthians 6:11). The last reason is because we are told, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)

It is also important to note Jesus’ two closest disciples, John and Peter, respectively, call Jesus the Word of Life (see John 1 and 1 John 1) and the Author of Life because the words of Jesus, both written and spoken, make God known and give life, complete healing, and complete joy.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I praise you for having a relationship of love within the Godhead. Thank you for sending Jesus to be our Savior so we can have a relationship with You through Him and receive complete healing and joy. I pray in Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen

  1. Correct me if I am wrong, but you seem to believe that only Christians can achieve true happiness and have complete healing. There are more Christians than believers of other religions. However, it is hard for me to understand that you think that those who worship Buddha, Allah or Shiva (just to name a few) have no chance of complete happiness or complete healing. There are people on this earth that have never heard of Jesus, they are religious and love the deity they have been taught to worship. To me this is like the catholic joke, where they are told not to go down that other hallway or they will discover that they aren’t the only ones in heaven.

    1. Yes, you are correct. I believe that only Christians can achieve complete healing and happiness. Even if people worship the same God as Jews and Muslims do (perhaps other religion’s deities are also the same God), we cannot have complete happiness on earth without Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Other religions don’t worship a triune God. If the Jews do, they don’t believe Jesus was their Messiah. Christians who won’t forgive themselves and don’t let the Holy Spirit change them will also not achieve complete healing and happiness. We know because of sin everyone won’t know about Jesus on earth and not everyone will have happy lives because of the families they were born into. That is not God’s will but unfortunately most don’t follow God’s will. I would say, though, that 99% of people have heard of Jesus.

Remember what I write is what I believe, and you have the perfect right to disagree with me. Maybe you are right with what you believe, and I am wrong. And that is okay with me.

I have no idea, however, of why that reminds you of the catholic joke you refer to. God will make sure that when Jesus comes again that everyone will know who Jesus is. He is a just and loving God, and He loves everyone despite the fact not everyone loves Him. He will have mercy on all (Romans 11:32). As I have said in the past that God forgives all sin [except those who speak against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:32)],so we will be surprised whom we will meet in heaven. I never said that people of other religions will not be completely healed or happy in heaven because I believe they will be.

  2. Yes, I guess we agree to disagree on this one! And, that is OK. You are not very specific here. You say that, “You believe that only Christians can achieve complete healing and happiness.” Then you say, “I never said that people of other religions will not be completely healed or happy.” When you say , only Christians, that indicates people of other religions are excluded. Very confusing! As far as the joke…catholics believe that they are the only ones in heaven. You believe that only Christians can achieve complete happiness and healing.

    1. I believe that only Christians can achieve complete healing and happiness on earth. You left off two words in my sentence when you quoted me. It should have been: “I never said that people of other religions will not be completely healed or happy in heaven.” Some Catholics do believe they will be the only ones in heaven, but I believe most people from other religions will be in heaven because God is a God of many chances. I don’t know everyone’s heart, but I don’t know how people could be completely healed or happy on earth without a savior, and Christianity is the only religion to offer that. And we know it is true because of written history.
