Daily Devotional Acts 2:14-17 – What did Joel mean old men will dream dreams? – I will pour out my Spirit on all people – Free Online Bible Study – Day 447

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

This morning as I read, “your old men will dream dreams,” it made me think of a vivid dream my father-in-law had. It was a dream that my daughter had children. It upset him because my daughter wasn’t married, and it was so real he wouldn’t believe it wasn’t true. As I studied this verse this morning, the Holy Spirit told me the dream was a prophecy.

Peter began his Pentecostal sermon in response to skeptics saying those speaking in tongues were drunk. Peter spoke with the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. He knew and explained they weren’t drunk but under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Joel prophesied not just the second coming of Jesus but also the period of the church which began with the speaking of tongues and will end with Jesus second coming. In this age, don’t discount the dreams of old men, prophecy of sons and daughters, and the visions of young men. God says He will pour out His Spirit on all people, and these things will happen.

I also want to point out this Scripture again mentions the Eleven and not the Twelve. After Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, he realized he made a mistake appointing Matthias as an apostle.

Dearest Father in heaven, holy is Your name. Thank You for Your power of the Holy Spirit to help us connect with You, to do Your will, and to give us Spiritual gifts. Give me all Your gifts that will help me fulfill the dreams you’ve placed in my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. I understand the scripture but I am having trouble, this morning, aligning my brain with the words and my thoughts. I am praying though, even though my thoughts are scattered. It was a hard day yesterday for multiple reasons. It seems to be carrying over to today. I am praying for peace, not just for myself, but for my whole family.
