Acts 1:24-26 – Why doesn’t God answer all prayers?/Will Judas go to heaven?

Then they (the 120 believers) prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two (Joseph and Matthias) you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:24-26)

I prayed to get my last job, but the boss would only hire me on an as-needed basis because he wasn’t sure I was the right person for the job. God reminded me to let Him be in control. I changed my prayer from God, please let me have that job to: God, if that job is the best option for my life, let the boss offer it to me. The latter is a prayer that God can always answer and is not making God choose between giving you what you want and what is best for you.

Like my first prayer, the prayer that Peter led boxed God in. God already had plans to make Paul the twelfth disciple and Peter and the early 120 believers only gave God the choice of Joseph and Matthias. No doubt Matthias prayed for his apostleship, but it was the wrong calling, and Scripture never mentions Matthias again.

We all make mistakes, but I give Peter credit for not judging Judas. I love that he said, “Judas left to go where he belongs.” Peter didn’t judge by saying that Judas was going to heaven or hell because it’s up to Jesus to judge. So it’s amazing to me how many bloggers say that Judas is in hell and quote this Scripture as proof.

Christians are told not to judge in this life, so we cannot answer the question, “Where does Judas belong?” Nevertheless, many try to answer the question with most sending Judas to hell. I think Peter was not specific about where Judas went because he tried not to judge.

Dearest Heavenly Father, holy is Your name. Thank you for being my refuge when I’m anxious. I give You all my problems and know You’ll take care of them. Sometimes when I’m nervous, I pray in haste and box You in without realizing what I’m doing. Please choose what’s best for me and not what I want at the time. When I judge without realizing it, point it out to me. It’s my mission to love, not judge. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. We have talked about answer to prayer before. I believe that God does not always answer our prayers the way we want or expect. He knows what is best for us and we do not always know that. I have asked, “Why didn’t You answer my prayer!” BUT He already did in a way that I never expected. Judging is so easy to do. I feel like I do it, sometimes, without even realizing it. I ask God to help me with that. I am praying for you and your family. I love you!

    1. We all judge without thinking. The other day one of my daughters told me she went to a “drag brunch.” She told me people were performing in drag. This was something I’m not used to so I asked her why she would want to go to something like that, and rightly she got upset with me. I asked God for forgiveness. I prayed for you this morning. I pray for your healing. I love you, Sis.
