In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group number about a hundred and twenty) and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”
It’s hard to wait. I hate waiting at a traffic light two or three times during rush hour. I imagine those days while Jesus’ disciples were waiting to be baptized by the Holy Spirit were tough. They wanted to tell people about Jesus, the resurrection, the meaning of Scriptures, and the ascension, but they were instructed to wait. At a point, Peter, who needed to talk, conjured up things to discuss. He must have been in the temple reading the scrolls when he came upon the current Bible’s Psalm 109:8 which said, “May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.”
Peter thought, “Ah ha! That Scripture is about Judas. We have to replace him.” There’s nothing in that Psalm, written by David, to indicate he was talked about Judas. He wrote of his own enemy. But Peter’s humanity wouldn’t let him wait for the counsel of the Holy Spirit. We’ll see that without the counsel of the Holy Spirit, Peter made a mistake in calling for a vote to replace Judas as a disciple. It is important to ask God not only for the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit but also for wisdom. He is our Counselor. Like Peter, how often do we make important decisions in our lives without asking God for the wisdom of His Spirit.
Dearest Father in Heaven, Holy is Your name. Let the Holy Spirit connect with my spirit to give me gifts, power, and wisdom so I can love, make decisions, and do your work supernaturally. In Jesus Name, I pray, amen.
We probably make hundreds of decisions in a day. I do think that we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We know in our hearts what we need help with and we should pray about that.
My life is simpler than yours. I pray about what I am going to post and that the Holy Spirit will give me wisdom what to write about and other important decisions. I guess you’re right though. I don’t pray when I decide what to cook for dinner and which pair of pajamas to wear. I wasn’t thinking about those kinds of decisions when I wrote my post. Hope you’re having a great day. Blessings.
