Acts 1:9-11 – How does God want us to spend our time?

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

I often stare into space thinking with God all things are possible, so I dream of my future or wait for God to tell me what He wants me to tell my readers about Scripture. Staring and waiting is not productive unless I’ve prayed first. If I don’t hear soon, I pray more earnestly.

Throughout life, we stare and wonder. Back stories in books and our own thoughts of the past happen during moments of gazing. When we stare into space we also think and dream of the future. That’s what these Men of Galilee, the apostles, were doing when they were interrupted by angels. When angels speak, we need to listen because they are messengers from God. In this Scripture they have the apostles think about why they are staring into space doing nothing. The angels can easily guess their unspoken answer. “We want to see where Jesus is going.”

Jesus had made the Scriptures clear to them, so they already knew where Jesus was going and who He was. Jesus was always about doing God’s work and loving, but after life on earth He realized how much more difficult that was in the confines of a human body.  Although His body was glorified during the resurrection as our new bodies will be when we resurrect, He maintained the scars he received on earth and was grateful for lessons learned because his love became empathetic. He wore our shoes and that won’t change.

Jesus is coming back. We don’t know when. Most reading this are ready, but how are we helping others prepare? Hopefully we’re spreading God’s love and not staring into space. Proverbs 4:25-26 says you should fix your gaze on the present, giving careful thought (and prayer) to the paths for your feet.

Dearest Heavenly Father, Your name is Holy. I praise You for Your wisdom and thank You for giving me Jesus to lead me on my path of righteousness and doing Your will. He guides me while understanding what I’m going through. Keep my feet from the paths of the enemy and give me the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit to do Your work. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. I think that God is a loving God, and therefore, He wants us to have lives that make us happy. We should enjoy and love our lives. We all have things that we encounter that do not make us happy. I know of no-one that has not gone through some sort of difficult time. They say that how we handle difficult times shows what kind of person we are. I hope that God sees my whole life because sometimes I do not handle adversity very well. I no longer day dream or gaze as much as I did when I was a child or a young adult. Maybe that is because as we grow older we also grow wiser. We also know more about our life path and how we want to live our lives. I want my life path to include the Holy Spirit in all that I do. Jody, again, I love your prayer, especially the last sentence.

    1. God knows everything about you. His Spirit has been with you with everything you’ve gone through. And He has cried with you. He loves you deeply and is proud of you for how you’ve progressed. You don’t let little things bother you any more and you’re able to give those things to Him. God wants you to handle adversity well. I hope you’re praying about it. God knows we’re human and don’t handle things very well. He wants us to depend on Him to do better and not try to handle it on our own because we never do well when we try to handle it on our own. Thanks for the encouragement. Blessings, Jody

  5. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox
and now each time a comment is added I get four e-mails with the same comment.

Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
    Appreciate it! asmr 0mniartist
