Acts 1:6-8 – How do I activate the power of the Holy Spirit?

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:6-8)

The Jews wanted freedom, and we in the United States understand that. We want freedom at all cost and are afraid the political party we don’t belong to will take our freedom. But true freedom isn’t found in the kingdoms of Israel or the United States, it’s found in the kingdom of God.

When we enter the kingdom of God, we’re called to do crazy things like love our enemies, turn the other cheek, and be gentle. When we don’t do those things, people around us, who don’t know God, will continue not to know God. There’s no reason for them to want what we have.

The apostles were called to make disciples of all nations, to heal, and drive out demons. Those were huge tasks, even for a group of twelve. One might think that Jesus would’ve told them to move on it right away. But He didn’t; He told them to wait. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”

Whenever we’re not loving another or not doing what God has called us to do, it is a clue. Wait. Pray for the power of the Holy Spirit. God promises, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”

Father God, help me love everyone around me, even those who aren’t easy to love. I need Your supernatural power to do that, so I pray for the Holy Spirit to come on me. Let me use Your power to love, accomplish everything you’ve called me to do, and leave my bad habits and traits at the cross. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

  1. I like your prayer, Jody. I can say, honestly, that I don’t do enough to love those who aren’t easy to love. We are supposed to surround ourselves with loving and positive people. There are, and have been people, in my life that I find difficult to love. Basically, I want to ignore them because they irritate me and fuel my anxiety. I do need the power of the Holy Spirit to have a better attitude and help me do a better job of loving and forgiving. Sometimes I feel the strong presence of the Holy Spirit and sometimes I feel like He is a million miles away.

    1. Sometimes we avoid God when we’re anxious and irritable instead of seeking his refuge because we fell when we’re in that state He doesn’t want anything to do with us. That is a lie the enemy tells us. When your child is anxious and irritable you want to help and so does God. God will keep putting people in your life who are not easy to love until you depend on Him to love them. When you feel like the Holy Spirit is a million miles away, that’s a clue God wants you to talk to Him, tell him what’s bothering you, and pray for His Holy Spirit to give you wisdom, comfort, and love. He promised to give you the power His Holy Spirit but only when you ask. Be relentless.

  2. You say that God will keep putting people in my life that are not easy to love. I don’t believe that God wants to make me unhappy. I guess that can happen, but we don’t have to like or love everybody, not even a family member. We are supposed to surround ourselves with people that are positive and caring. At this point in my life I don’t need or want the struggle of bad relationships. I have been through too many difficult relationships in my life, that have made me frustrated and unhappy. No more relationships with people who like to stir the pot.

    1. You’re right. God wants you to be happy. He wants you to give him all your worries. When there is something or someone that gives you anxiety in your life, He wants you to give it to Him. I know when God was working on my anger issue, he put people in my life that made me angry until I learned to deal with my anger. You have people in your life who have hurt you deeply, and God doesn’t expect you to be best friends with them or even have them in your life. He will take care of that situation. But there is another person that God put in your life who frustrates you who isn’t going anywhere. Something happened in his life, probably when he was a little boy, that gave him a poor self-image. Of course, you don’t have to like the way he acts sometimes or have him live with you, that would be unhealthy for his family, but I feel strongly God wants you to help him with his self-image and spread His love to him. I’m praying for you in this situation and for everything. I love you, Sis. Blessings.
