Acts 1:1-5 – Will the Holy Spirit help me leave a bad habit or trait at the cross?

Again, Luke writes to Theophilus. Theophilus means those loved by God, so he writes to all of us. It’s fitting that the apostles begin their ministries with the baptism of the Holy Spirit because the power, gifts, and knowledge of the Holy Spirit help us succeed, by fulfilling our dreams, helping us remember, and providing self-control. It’s also fitting, now that we know Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to us, we use the power of the Holy Spirit to leave a trait or bad habit at the cross. I’m leaving harshness and food addiction there.

God may not be calling you to leave anything at the cross and that’s okay, but for those of us whom God is calling to leave something at the cross, trust Him to Help you. If you haven’t asked Jesus to be your savior, ask Him now. Use the knowledge learned in Luke to be a disciple. Keep studying God’s word and pray. Be a disciple of Jesus as the Study of Luke has taught us. Choose a prayer partner to keep you accountable, and surround yourself with loving people. Place God on the throne of your life. The following prayer praises God and asks for everything Jesus asked for and received to survive torture just before and while hanging from the cross. This prayer will help us, too. Personalize it to meet your needs I suggest praying it several times a day.

Dearest Heavenly Father, Holy is Your name. I love You and praise You because You are trustworthy and keep Your promises. Thank you for sending Jesus to save me. Forgive me for_________. Help me forgive ________ who made me think less of myself and helped me develop bad habits and traits. I give You my problems of _______________. I know you will answer those prayers. Be my refuge Lord. In the Name of Jesus, remove the enemy from my life and keep him out, so I don’t fall into temptation. Make him a footstool for my feet. Give me the power of Your Holy Spirit to help me leave ___________ at the cross. Let me crave you, not my bad habit. Let Your Holy Spirit fill my thoughts, my heart, and every part of my being, so I can be more like Jesus. Help me be positive and know with your help I can do this. Assist me to follow Your plan for my life by drinking from Your cup, not mine. Send an angel to help me. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

  1. I hope that the Holy Spirit is within me, to help me leave my bad habits behind. I ask for help everyday but I must have willpower to help me in this journey. I enjoyed the Book of Luke and now I look forward to Acts.

    1. You can know positively from Scripture that the Holy Spirit is within you, but you still must pray for His power every day. The point is God has given us bad habits and traits that we must depend on Him to get rid of. We are made to crave God, and if we don’t crave Him, we crave other things. Our own willpower won’t help, we need the power of the Holy Spirit. It won’t happen if we try half-heartedly. It requires praying a prayer like yesterday’s prayer a few times a day, each time praying more earnestly. Are you ready to try that with me? It’s okay if you’re not.
