Daily Devotional Luke 24:37-43 – Why did Jesus eat after the resurrection? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 432

They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.” (Luke 24:37-43)

These disciples who just declared, “The Lord is risen,” are skeptical that this is the Lord. They are frightened and think they see a ghost. Jesus shows us we’ll not be ghosts after we die, we’ll have a body. I will be Jody and you will be you. We’ll eat and enjoy a glass of wine at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and have all our senses. Our bodies will be better because they won’t grow old. Our senses will be heightened, seeing and hearing things we couldn’t on earth. We’ll be able to walk through walls because we’ll be in a different dimension.

Jesus knew people would say his appearance was an illusion, so He ate fish in front of more than thirteen people to show He was not an illusion or a ghost. We rag on Doubtin’ Thomas who didn’t believe Jesus resurrected until after he stuck his fingers in Jesus’ nail holes and the stab wound in His side. But many still didn’t believe after Thomas did that. Jesus knows we’re all Doubtin’ Thomases and that there’ll be times in our lives when we don’t believe and our faith dwindles. He knows we can’t have peace unless we believe without a doubt. So, Jesus ate fish to give us peace: peace in knowing we’ll be ourselves in heaven, peace in knowing we’ll have better bodies in heaven, peace in knowing His resurrection was real, and peace in knowing He realizes we’re all Doubtin’ Thomases and loves us anyway.

Father God, I am thankful you thought of everything, even Jesus eating fish after the resurrection, so I can have peace. I am a Doubtin’ Thomas from time to time, but you understand. Lord, I take your hand today and imagine your embrace, waiting for the time I’m in a different dimension with heightened senses, and I will eat withYou at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Knowing that gives me peace. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. Jesus gave us the greatest gift. We know when we leave this earth that we will enter the kingdom of Heaven. Our bodies will not be old or sick anymore. We will only experience peace and love. A beautiful place, with no place for hate or anger or sickness. It will be a blessed place. Father, take my doubts and strengthen my person.
