Daily Devotional Luke 24:13-16 – Is Jesus with us when we don’t recognize Him? – The Road to Emmaus, Part 1 – Online Bible Study – Commentary in Easy English – Day 423

Now that same day two of them (disciples) were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. (Luke 24:13-16)

Have you ever looked for your sunglasses and they’re on your head or your cell phone and you’re holding it? Sometimes things are right in front of us and we don’t see them.

We’re told (in later Scripture) that one of the disciples on the road to Emmaus is Cleopas. Let’s personalize our journey from the empty tomb down the road to Emmaus and pretend we’re the other disciple. We have been told by women that Jesus is alive. But where is He? We don’t see Him. More confused by the women, we talk about everything Jesus had been to us over the last three years. Our hopes are gone. Jesus is dead. He couldn’t be the Messiah. How can He save us if He couldn’t save himself? He couldn’t even free us from Roman occupation. He must not be the Son of God – just another prophet.

You and I know who Jesus is because we’ve been studying Him. Or do we know? Are we expecting Him to be something He’s not. Are we expecting Him to help us with things like freeing us from Roman occupation, things that aren’t part of God’s will? If we are, we won’t recognize Him either. We have a promise from the Bible that Jesus won’t leave us, but why don’t we sense his presence? Perhaps traveling the road to Emmaus with an unrecognizable friend will shine a light on Him so we can see who He is. He is with us whether we recognize Him or not.

Father God, On my Road to Emmaus, help me realize who Jesus is. Help me discover the message Jesus wants me to learn. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen

  1. I woke up early this morning. I am nervous and afraid. Maybe, I have no reason to feel this way, but I do. It has been a long 2 weeks. I have asked Jesus to be with me today, not to leave my side. I need to feel comfort and peace. I maybe on a road to a new journey and I need you by my side as I travel this road. Please don’t let go of me and help me be strong.

    1. I am praying. Know that I will be there for you — whatever you need. Thanks for trusting me with your feelings. I pray the Holy Spirit comforts you. I am so thankful Drew is with you!
