Daily Devotional Luke 23:46 – Why should I trust God? – What does breathed His last mean? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 415

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:46)

A deep sadness fills me as Jesus delivers his own eulogy in a loud voice. He dedicates his life to doing the will of His Father. And now, in death, He commits His spirit to God. After hanging on the cross for three hours, he should be near suffocation, unable to speak in a loud voice. But Jesus remains in control with the power of the Holy Spirit until the end. Jesus decides to take his last breath after delivering those words and willingly gives up His Spirit to God.

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit,” are words from Psalm 31:5. David goes on to say, “Deliver me, Lord, my faithful God. Jesus, of course, doesn’t need deliverance, but we do, and in Psalm 31:1-4 David tells us why we should trust the Lord enough to commit our lives and spirits to Him. 1) He won’t let us be put to shame, 2) He makes us righteous, 3) He comes quickly to our rescue, 4) He is a strong fortress to save us, 5) He leads and guides us, 6) He keeps us free from traps that are set for us, and 7) He is our refuge.

Mary Magdalene; Mary, Jesus’ mother, and John don’t yet understand Jesus’ death as we do. They are devastated thinking they have lost one who loved them like no one else could. He didn’t die. Our sin did. He breathed his last and took the criminal beside Him to be with God in Paradise. He will take us too when we finish the work on earth God has started in us. Thanks to Jesus, after we take our last breath on earth, we will take our first breath in heaven. Death no longer declares victory over us.

Father God, I thank you for Jesus, my encourager, forgiver, savior, fortress, leader, liberator, and refuge. He’s alive and well in heaven where I will be after I take my last breath on earth. I thank you not only for the hope of being with You, Jesus, and all my loved ones who have passed, but for the new body you will clothe me in, free of disease, pain, sin, and tears and full of love and joy. In the meantime, I commit my life to doing Your will as Jesus taught me. In His name I pray, amen.

  1. Heavenly Father, in Jesus Christ’s precious name, I pray. We are at the cross and Your Son has taken his last breath. We have been preparing ourselves to leave an unwanted trait at the cross. I am leaving two things for you to help me with. I am trying to be successful but I know I am not perfect, and some days will be better than others. Please encourage me when I have a bad day and give me strength so I do not give up. Please be with my prayer partner and give her strength for her journey. We give you all the praise and glory! Amen

    1. Thanks for your prayers sis. I just prayed for you also. I feel strong today with the power of the Holy Spirit. The sun is trying to peak through the clouds today. We’re still at the cross thinking about all that has happened. God, Help us discern its meaning in our lives. Give my prayer partner and readers strength for their journeys also.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement and coming to my website. I hope you will return so that we can become family! I prayed for you today and hope you know how wide and long and high and deep God’s love for you is. Blessings, Jody
