Daily Devotional Luke 23:27-28 – Who are the Daughters of Jerusalem? Are you a daughter of Jerusalem? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 407

And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Luke 23:27-28)

If you’re a man reading this devotional, don’t click it off. If you’re not married, you’ll want to choose a wife who is a “Daughter of Jerusalem,” and if you’re married, you should pray your wife becomes a “Daughter of Jerusalem.”

First and foremost “Daughters of Jerusalem:” (1) follow Christ even in the toughest situations. What could be harder than seeing the man you love and place above all others be beaten, mocked, fall under the weight of the cross, walk to his death, be nailed to the cross, and suffer a prolonged suffocation. Only one man, Apostle John, could do it, but a group of women could. Therefore, these women are (2) tough in their emotions. Yes, they are empathetic and cry, but they stand up to and thrive in difficult situations.

“Daughters of Jerusalem” (3) prioritize. None of these women were at home baking bread and apple pies, cleaning their house, doing laundry, or playing with their children when their Savior was about to die. If they were a “Martha,” one who prioritizes housework, they’ve learned loving Jesus and spreading God’s love are more important. Today, these tough women are (4) educated and still learning (they chose to be with a teacher), (5) are caregivers to children and/or adults (Jesus tells them to weep for their children.) (6) have jobs and/or volunteer (most of these women had full-time jobs at home and also found time to spread God’s love.)

God created humans to crave, specifically to crave Him/Jesus. These Daughters of Jerusalem (7) craved Jesus’ love, and (8) craved His teachings. As long as these women were breathing, they had to be with Jesus on His last day. When you crave God/Jesus, there’s no need to crave anything else. These Daughters of Jerusalem had no time or desire to snack, hold a cocktail party for themselves, shop, or gamble.

Jesus considers these women so important, He breaks his silence for them. He tells them not to weep for Him, but to weep for themselves. Jesus knows their daughters will be pregnant during the war against the Romans and those babies will die from starvation. The Jews remain stubborn, and they bring a war on themselves.

Any woman has the potential to be a Daughter of Jerusalem. I’m not there yet. Many strive for it, but not many attain it. I’m hoping to get closer when I arrive at the cross and retain what Jesus has taught me. If I’m successful I’ll be able to give up craving food and the sharpness I sometimes convey for Him. I want to be gentle like Jesus.

Father God, help me be a loving Daughter of Jerusalem, craving only You and Jesus. Help me be more like Jesus as I travel to the cross with Him and beyond into the Book of Acts and study how the Apostles became more like Him. I love you, and I pray in Your Son’s precious and holy name, amen.

  1. Another good Biblical history lesson. Interesting to learn more about the Daughters of Jerusalem. The world would be a much better place if we were all gentle like Jesus.
