Daily Devotional Luke 22:52-53 – What should Christians do when darkness reigns? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 394

Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.” (Luke 22:52-53)

Jesus spotlights hypocrisy. By day he taught in the temple courtyard, yet they come for Him at night with weapons as though He were a criminal. His mission wasn’t rebellious. He came so people would return to God, not to return Israel to the Jews. He taught to lay down our swords and heal our enemies with love.

It’s frightening when darkness reigns, the hours we’ve let the enemy rule our lives and abandoned Jesus. But, hopefully, we’ve learned our lesson. This time we’re going to stay with Jesus on our journey to the cross. This first time to the cross, John was the only apostle who remained. For most it takes multiple journeys to realize we’re better off to let Jesus be in control.

Dearest Father in heaven, I love and esteem You. Help me grip your hand tightly as you lead me down the path of righteousness, fulfilling Your will. Help me exchange my sword of anger and anxiety for Your spiritual sword of conviction and healing. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. We call it the Holy Land, in part because Jesus walked and taught there. How do we call it the Holy Land when much of the time it is a place of darkness? You said, “Jesus came so people would return to God, not to return Israel to the Jews. The wars have gone on for thousands of years. It is not a place of peace and people are afraid to travel there because of safety. I am wondering why Jesus didn’t return Israel to the Jews? I would love to take a Christian tour of Israel someday. I also pray that His spiritual sword helps me let go of anger and anxiety.

    1. In the Old Testament Jerusalem is referred to as the Holy City five times, and the Holy Land once in Psalm 78:54: “So He (God) brought them to His holy land, To this hill country which His right hand had gained.” It was the name, “Holy Land” that stuck with us through history. Of course, Jesus brought the kingdom of God there as well, as you said, making it more holy. Psalm 78 gives a great history of all the mistakes the Israelites made through the time of David. Jesus did not return Israel to the Jews because it wasn’t the will of God. As for why it wasn’t the will of God, I cannot say. I think it is because the Jews have continued to not honor and believe in Jesus, but, of course, I don’t know that for sure. If you want to go to Israel, now is probably the safest time. Nothing in the Bible indicates that God will give Israel back to the Jews before the end of time when Jesus returns. At that time there will be a new earth, a new heaven, and a new Israel as indicated by the Scripture I have listed for you below. “As you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.” (2 Peter 3:12-13) “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. … Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, … And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. … And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’ Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.'” (Revelations 21:1-5a) “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people; the voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the voice of crying.” (Isaiah 65:17-19)

His spiritual sword has let me let go of a lot of anger and anxiety. I love to rest in God’s peace. But of course I am human and often fail. But with my failures, I realize I need a savior all the more.
