Daily Devotional Luke 22:31-34 – Does God allow Satan to sift us as wheat? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 387

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers and sisters.” But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” (Luke 22:31-34)

Simon Peter spoke with confidence, certain he wouldn’t deny Jesus. Having too much confidence in our own measly power impedes us from praying. We don’t take advantage of the power of the Holy Spirit. Of course, God didn’t send His Holy Spirit until after Jesus had died. When we study Acts, we’ll see the great change in the Apostles after receiving the Holy Spirit. We’ll desire that power, too.

God uses Satan to teach us through experience. Satan asked God permission to sift Peter and apparently all the disciples and you and me as wheat. God gives Satan permission to enter our lives if there’s a lesson to help us grow. Peter needed to have less confidence in himself and more confidence in God to reach his destiny. God tells Peter He will turn back to Him and commands him to strengthen others. That can only be done through the power of the Holy Spirit.

If we take a quick look back at our own lives, chances are we had more difficulties when we weren’t trusting God. Think about the lessons you’ve learned and how you’ve grown through hard times.

Dearest Father in Heaven, remind me to trust you so Satan doesn’t sift me as wheat and I can live in the refuge of Jesus. Give me an extra portion of Your Holy Spirit today to love greatly and accomplish Your will. I don’t know how to strengthen my family and others. Show me through your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. Your prayer was very touching, Jody. I, too, ask for an extra portion of the Holy Spirit so that I can love greatly. The Holy Spirit will show us how to strengthen those we love when the time is right.

    1. I have been blogging for three years. Thank you for your encouragement and coming to my website. God allows Satan to sift us as wheat so we can learn from adversity. I prayed for you and your family today and hope you know how wide and long and high and deep God’s love is for you. Blessings, Jody
