Daily Devotional Luke 22:20 – What does drinking wine at communion represent? – Online Bible Study – Commentary In easy English – Day 383

In the same way, after the supper, he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” Luke 22:20

Jewish people drink four cups of wine at the Passover. We studied the two Jesus drank before dinner yesterday (representing deliverance and freedom). The cup Jesus drank after the supper represented redemption. God promised to redeem the Jews during the Passover with the blood of the lamb painted above their door frames, but in the New Covenant Jesus promised to redeem everyone with His own blood.

The promise of this New Covenant is beautifully written in Jeremiah 31:33-34: “I will put my law (to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself) within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

The fourth cup wasn’t drunk during the last supper. Jesus will drink it at the Supper of the Lamb when God declares to all who are saved, “I am Your God, and you are My people.” Before taking communion on Sundays, we are to ask forgiveness for our wrongdoings as we ask God to redeem us. We are so blessed to be free from sin because of God’s grace and the blood of His lamb.

Father God, thank you for Your grace of forgiveness, pouring out Your blood for me so I can be free from sin, free from worry, and free from laws except Your law of love that you’ve written on my heart. I pray in Jesus’ precious and holy name, Amen.

  1. I miss taking communion because I don’t go to church. It is almost like you can feel Jesus’ mercy and grace while you are taking it.

    1. Donette, thanks for your encouragement. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I prayed for you and your family. Blessings, Jody
