Daily Devotional Luke 22:1-5 – How can we fight evil? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 379

Now the Festival of Unleavened bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. (Luke 22:1-5)

Stubborn sheep often won’t walk into the slaughterhouse on their own accord. Small slaughterhouses sometimes use a trained goat to lead the sheep to their death. This goat is called a Judas goat. With Judas’ help, Jesus was led to his death.

Jesus placed Judas in charge of the moneybag, and Judas stole money from it. (See John 12:6) It doesn’t seem wise that Jesus would choose a thief to be in charge of the moneybag or to be a disciple. But Jesus didn’t need money; he could make it appear in the mouth of a fish as when He and Peter paid their taxes. (See Matthew 27) Jesus needed a disciple who wouldn’t resist Satan, would betray Him, and hand Him over to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard when no crowd was present, according to God’s plan.

Luke 22:3 tells us Satan entered Judas. That’s scary. It means Satan could easily enter one of us. The Bible says: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.” (See 1 Peter 5:8-9)

Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our struggle isn’t against people, it’s against the powers of the dark world. Satan enters us, and we do things we otherwise would never do. The Bible tells us to put on the armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes of readiness that come from the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (See Ephesians 6:14-17)

Anything dark in our lives, anything out of the realm of love, comes from Satan, and we need to pray and fight against darkness with every tool we have. Medication, Christian psychologists/social workers/counselors, and homes for abused women are also among the tools God gives us.

Judas didn’t fight Satan, and as we’ll see on our journey to the cross, his life ended sadly. Satan will enter our lives, and those without God don’t have enough power to fight him. Without God, the world is an ugly place. That’s why it’s so important to spread God’s love, showing others God’s work in our lives.

Dearest Heavenly Father, give me someone to spread God’s love to today. Help me to help others believe in You, so the world is a kinder place. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

  1. It is terrifying to think that Satan can just enter our body. I guess that is why priests do exorcisms. I watched only one movie that dealt with this subject. It had a very negative impact on my life. For months afterwards I was fearful. Most horror films are poorly done. BUT this movie was about something that could actually happen, which is why, I believe, it scared me so badly. I finally had to put on my armor to get over it. I prayed Satan away. I believe we can spread God’s love in our own home and the minute we leave our home we can spread God’s love to anyone we encounter. Our world will always be a kinder place with God in it.

    1. I refuse to watch horror movies or any movie that takes my joy away. I never watched the Exorcist. The spread of God’s love is a good way to fight evil.
