Daily Devotional Luke 21:10-13 – Does God know our future? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 372

Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. And so you will bear testimony to me.” (Luke 21:10-13)

Jesus predicts the Jewish/Roman war from 66 to 70 AD, the great Pompeii, Italy earthquake in 62 AD and a smaller earthquake when Jesus died. Josephus, a historian born a few years after Jesus was crucified, wrote much of what we know about the first century post Jesus. Thomas Coke’s commentary on the Bible (studylight.org) states: “Josephus, in his relation of the signs and prodigies which preceded the taking of Jerusalem, mentions that a star hung over the city like a sword, and a comet continued for a whole year; that the people being assembled to celebrate the feast of unleavened bread, at the ninth hour of the night, there shone so great a light about the altar and the temple, that it seemed to be bright day, and this continued for a half an hour.” Acts 11:28 tells us there was severe famine during the reign of Claudius (41-54 AD).

Jesus knows the future of his apostles. They will be seized, persecuted, and imprisoned before his predictions happen. When they are taken, He asks they tell others about Him.

Jesus knows our futures and His great plans for us. When we follow Him and use the power of His Holy Spirit, wonderful things will happen.

Dearest Father in Heaven, thank you for Your love. You know the possibilities within me and my capabilities with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Please advise and nudge me so I will fulfill the plans You have for my life. In Jesus’ precious and holy name, I pray. Amen.

  1. God knows everything about and I believe he knows our future. I think that there is a plan for each of us. BUT then there is free will, which always confuses me when I think of God knowing what our plan is. Does he know our hearts so well that he knows which good or bad choice we will make? A good choice can change our whole life, as well as a bad choice changing our life path. I have never really heard an explanation of this that satisfies me.

    1. God has a plan for you, but you have free will to walk away from it. I believe God knows whether you will follow His plan or not. But that is just my thinking. I addressed this issue further in my Bible Study today (Day 374).
