Daily Devotional Luke 20:41-44 – How to break a habit, step 9 – Pray, “Make my enemies a footstool for my feet.” –  Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 367

Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’” David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” (Luke 20:41-44)

As prophesied, Jesus was born from the lineage of David, a warrior. God made David a prophet, and David trusted God from the time he was a boy and defeated Goliath with a slingshot. The Jews wanted a Messiah like David to defeat the Romans with an army using the council of Jewish leaders. Since they didn’t trust God or Jesus to defeat the enemy, they never asked. Therefore, the Romans massacred the Jews and their temple in 70 AD.

David wrote Psalm 110 from which Jesus quotes: “The Lord said to my Lord.” In other words, “God said to Jesus.” David, a prophet, knew Jesus was with him and that He didn’t need an army, only God’s power, to defeat his enemies. David used that power to defeat Goliath, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Syrians, the Arameans, the Edomites, and the Ammonites. Jesus’ Holy Spirit has the power to defeat our enemies as well.

Whenever someone comes against you, sit close to Jesus and pray, “Make my enemies a footstool for my feet.” That’s a powerful prayer and the ninth step to leaving a bad habit or trait at the cross.

Dearest Father in Heaven, Holy is Your name. Forgive my sins. As I walk to the cross with Jesus, I give Him authority over my heart and soul. I will encounter the enemy and his soldiers tempting and lying to me. Help me have the faith of David as I leave ____________ at the cross. I trust Jesus to conquer it. Make my enemies a footstool for my feet and keep me in Your refuge. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
