Daily Devotional Luke 17:31-37 – Why should we love God above all things? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 336

On that day (the second coming of Jesus) no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” “Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.” (Luke 17:31-37)

Tonight we watched the movie, The Perfect Gift, about a town that celebrated Christmas but didn’t invite Jesus. They called a Christmas party, a winter gala and said, “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” Christmas had no meaning until Jes, a drifter, came into town with love and showed the residents what Christmas should be like. Maxine, after she was tutored by Jes, teaches us we should fight for our priorities.

This Scripture is about priorities. Do we love God or do we love the World? If we are alive when Jesus returns, it will be unusually light outside. We’ll look up to the sky for answers, and we’ll see Jesus coming for us. If we’re not prepared, don’t know what’s happening, or don’t desire to be with Jesus we might be frightened and start gathering worldly things. If we love Jesus, we’ll hold our hands toward him and beg him to take us with him to heaven. At that time we’re no longer able to help someone find the kingdom of God. Those left behind will have to face Judgment. They will meet Jesus and after Judgment will most likely decide they need a savior. If we’re alive to God, we’ll go to heaven. If we’re dead to God, vultures will gather around us.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I pray for my family and loved ones who don’t know and love you. Lord, help me know what to say to them to bring them closer to you. If I’m not the one who can help them, please send another who can. Lord, assist me to prepare for life in heaven. Give me Your wisdom so I know what’s important. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. You explain this scripture perfectly! Thank you. I continue to pray for those that don’t know the Lord. I pray that something positive will happen to show them that we are his children and He loves us.

    1. Thanks for your encouragement. I’m glad you enjoyed the devotional. My computer has a virus and I am trying to post but can’t.
