Daily Devotional Luke 16:13-15 – The Parable of the Unjust Steward (Part 4) – Is being rich a sin? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 323

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight. (Luke 16:13-15)

Are you like Gollum in Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien? Is money your ring? Once you have it for a while is it hard to let go of? Do you guard it with your life? Is money your “precious?” Did you sneer like the Pharisees when you read this passage? Do you have multiple homes, a private jet, drink expensive wines every night, and/or overspend on clothes and jewelry? Are you using your money for favors that will buy you power? Do you constantly talk about your investments? If you answered yes to any of those questions, money could be your master. If so, you’re probably unhappy because you can never have enough. If money is your master, God still loves you more than you can imagine, but He detests what you’re doing in some aspects of your life.

It isn’t a sin to have money, a large home, or a mansion. You may need it for a large family, fostering children, hosting Bible Studies and youth groups, or telling the wealthy about God. God wants you to have money to bless others and do the work you were born to do.

God loves you more than any father. He doesn’t want you to barely scrape by. If you’ve accumulated money while keeping God’s commands of working diligently and honestly, while loving and shepherding, you are blessed. God said to Abraham in Genesis 12:2b: I will bless you. I will make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. It was God who made Abraham wealthy and gave him power so he could shepherd the Jews and be a blessing. Abraham followed God diligently, and God blessed him. God was his master, money wasn’t. If God wants you to be famous, he’ll make you famous like he did Abraham, who was rich, or like Paul, who was poor. Using your money to make you famous will never make you happy, but it is not a sin for Christians to be wealthy.

Father God, bless me and my family with the Holy Spirit and every blessing I need to bless others and fulfill my purpose in Your kingdom. Help me stop and ask questions about upcoming purchases. Do I need it? Can I use it bless others? Will I use it for the glory of God? Thank you for all I have and help me use money wisely. God, I pray you will always be my master; only then will I be happy. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. The scripture and your devotion gives us a lot to think about. I know the feeling of, will I have enough money to pay my bills this month. It isn’t a good feeling to worry about money and if you have enough to get you to the next paycheck. So many people have to live this way and the stress of that is not good for your health and body. My life is a lot different now. I worked hard and live comfortably. The experience was a good one though. It makes you humble and you think about how you spend money. You don’t think that it is a good experience while you are going through hard times. It is something that you can look back at and know that you learned something from the experience. Now I am helping family and feel that I am doing God’s work with what I have. I feel blessed that I have the resources to help.

    1. You’re right it is good to experience hard times to make you humble and appreciate having some money when you get it. When we can trust God, we don’t stress out. I am glad you feel blessed. I do too.

  2. constantly i used to read smaller articles that as well clear
their motive, and that is also happening with this piece of writing which I am reading here.

    1. Thank you so much for coming to my website. I hope you will return so that we can become family! I prayed for you today and hope you know how wide and long and high and deep God’s love for you is. Blessings, Jody
