Daily Devotional Luke 15:8-10 – The Parable of the Lost Coin – Online Bible Study – Should Christians seek the lost? – Commentary in easy English – Day 313

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 14:8-10)

In her book, On the Way Home, Rose Wilder Lane tells a story about her parents Almonzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder. They had moved to the Ozarks in search of an apple orchard to begin a new life. A one-hundred dollar bill to purchase the land had been placed safely in a desk, but when they went to the desk to retrieve the money, it was gone. Almonzo and Laura searched the desk frantically, removing and opening every envelope and turning the desk upside down and shaking it but the bill was gone. They searched frantically, and finally found it hidden in the seam between pieces of wood.

The Parable of the Lost Coin differs from the Parable of the Lost Sheep in the way the lost item was found. Instead of Jesus searching, a disciple helped God find His lost. Like Laura Ingalls Wilder, the woman was poor and the coin meant everything to her.

To find a lost sheep we must be systematic and diligent in our search. This woman shined her light of love into the darkness of a soul. She swept the dust from the lost to show them they were made beautifully by God and worthy of His love. All of heaven rejoiced over the lost that repented. Jesus wants every soul with Him in heaven. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus challenges us with His Great Commission. “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Dearest Father in heaven, give me the power of the Holy Spirit to find words to say and Your love to give to members of my family or friends that are lost. If it is Your will, help me seek the lost by volunteering in a High School, a prison ministry, a woman’s shelter, or a home for pregnant women. Show me Your will Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. Yes, I believe that Christians should seek the lost. Jody, you have a platform to help others with your on-line devotions. You are explaining the Bible to help others understand the word of God. My neighbors belong to a church that help the homeless. For the moment, my choice has been to worship at home. That are a lot of people that do that now because of COVID. In a way, I feel I lose opportunities to help others because I am not a member of a church. I pray that when the opportunity to help someone, who is in need, presents itself I see it and act upon it as Christ would want me to help.

    1. It’s great that you pray about opportunities to help people. Sometimes God wants us to help people close to home. God has called on me to help my own family or a neighbor. Maybe he’ll nudge you to go with Your friend on a mission. Don’t feel like you have to save the world, God will let you know what He wants you to do. I am also worshipping at home due to COVID but like you mentioned, we will probably return to church after there’s a vaccination for increased opportunities to help other and for fellowship. I’m so glad mom and dad provided us the opportunity for fellowship while we were growing up. It was a wonderful gift.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I received a few wonderful comments today from various people in your missionary group. I went to the Kosky’s website and read about the wonderful things you’ve done in South Africa. Congratulations on being an integral part of the Kosky’s ministry. You all seem like wonderful people. I am praying for you and your missionary group. Blessings, Jody
